In 1978 zette de Saab 99 Turbo de automobiele eredivisie op scherp. De pers schreef: “Deze Saab heeft sportwagenbestuurders hun exclusieve recht op snelle auto's met injectiemotoren ontnomen”. Dit is een zeldzaam mooi exemplaar van het allereerste modeljaar in de meest gezochte Combi Coupé-uitvoering. De auto spendeerde vrijwel zijn hele leven in Hongarije, waar hij de laatste tien jaar is vertroeteld door een Amerikaanse advocaat die daar jarenlang was gestationeerd en al die tijd onderdelen bij ons bestelde. Nu hij teruggaat naar de VS heeft hij besloten de 99 Turbo in Europa te laten en heeft hij de auto aan ons toevertrouwd. Zelf is hij ervan overtuigd dat dit de mooiste 99 Turbo van Europa is. Toch hebben wij sinds de auto hier kwam nog diverse verbeterpunten weten te vinden. De auto is ongeveer tien jaar geleden volledig gerestaureerd. De carrosserie is daarbij volledig nieuw gespoten en de motor compleet gereviseerd. Wij hebben de puntjes op de i gezet. Dat bij de restauratie kosten noch moeite zijn gespaard, blijkt wel bij een blik onder de motorkap. Hier is de auto misschien nog wel netter dan toen ‘ie werd afgeleverd. De wijnrode metallic lak - Cardinal Red - is diep glanzend en het bijpassende rode velours interieur is eveneens in een schitterende staat. Alle kenmerkende Turbo-details zijn uiteraard aanwezig: het turbodrukmetertje op het dashboard, de voorspoiler, de Turbo-badges rondom, het fraaie driespaaks sportstuur en in perfecte staat verkerende Inca-wielen. De auto is met een fabrieks-schuifdak geleverd en in het middenconsole werd een Becker radio/cassettespeler gemonteerd. Op de achterruit kwam een van de meest typerende accessoires van de jaren ’70: jaloezieën. Rijden met deze 99 Turbo is een feest. Rond de 3.000 toeren geeft de Garrett-turbo de auto een boost van jewelste, natuurlijk met de bijbehorende fluit. Het lijdt geen enkele twijfel: dit is een rasechte klassieker in een schitterende staat. In 1978, the Saab 99 Turbo shook up the automotive elite. The car spent almost its entire life in Hungary, where it has been pampered for the last ten years by an American lawyer who was stationed there for many years and ordered parts from us throughout that time. Now that he is returning to the US, he has decided to leave the 99 Turbo in Europe and has entrusted the car to us. He himself is convinced that this is the finest 99 Turbo in Europe. Nevertheless, since the car arrived here, we have managed to identify several areas for improvement. The car was fully restored around ten years ago. The bodywork was completely repainted and the engine fully overhauled. We have put the finishing touches to it. A glance under the bonnet clearly shows that no expense was spared during the restoration. In fact, the car is perhaps even in a better condition under bonnet now than when it was first delivered. The burgundy metallic paintwork – Cardinal Red – has a deep shine, and the matching red velour interior is also in superb condition. All the characteristic Turbo details are of course present: the turbo pressure gauge on the dashboard, the front spoiler, the Turbo badging all round, the three-spoke sports steering wheel and the Inca wheels, which are in a perfect condition. The car was supplied with a factory-fitted sunroof, and a Becker radio/cassette player has been fitted in the centre console. The rear window is equipped with an extra so very typical for the 1970s: blinds. Driving this 99 Turbo is a real treat. At around 3,000 rpm, the Garrett turbo gives the car its impressive boost, accompanied, of course, by the characteristic whistle.
