Het tijdloze ontwerp ontstond onder leiding van hoofdontwerper Bruno Sacco, en met innovaties als de automatisch uitklappende rolbeugel liep de SL ver voor op zijn tijd. Bij de facelift van 1998 kreeg de SL 320 een geheel nieuwe 3.2 liter V6 motor met drie kleppen per cilinder en dubbele ontsteking, goed voor 224 pk, gekoppeld aan een soepele automatische versnellingsbak.
