L’architettura a sei cilindri della 296 GTB affonda le radici nell’incomparabile esperienza racing del Cavallino Rampante: la prima Ferrari a montare un V6 centrale-posteriore fu la 246 SP nel 1961, vettura che vinse tra l’altro la Targa Florio quell’anno e nel 1962. Sempre nel 1961, Ferrari vinse il suo primo titolo Costruttori di Formula 1 con la 156 F1 spinta da un V6 a 120°. I turbo centrali furono installati per la prima volta da Ferrari sulla 126 CK e poi sulla 126 C2, prima monoposto turbo ad aggiudicarsi il Campionato del Mondo di Formula 1 nel 1982, cui seguì anche il successo del 1983 con la 126 C3.
