In 1975, following Aston Martin’s acquisition by a group of North American investors, the Lagonda narrowly escaped being dropped from the marque’s catalogue. However, in an effort to compete with the leading luxury manufacturers of the 1970s, Aston Martin developed a new generation of its flagship saloon and unveiled it at the 1976 London Motor Show. The Lagonda could be specified in a variety of exterior and interior colours, yet according to Aston Martin, its equipment was comprehensive as standard, with no additional options required. This positioning perfectly reflected the ambition Aston Martin had for the Lagonda at the time. Under its long bonnet sat an evolution of the Series I’s 5.3-litre V8. Power was reduced from 320 bhp to 280 bhp, while torque increased to 490 Nm. The Series II was fitted with the now-famous CRT display and was the first production car to feature a fully digital instrument display. The dashboard was initially developed by students at Cranfield University, but after numerous setbacks, development was handed over to Avelina Corporation, a company specialising in aviation instrumentation. The time-consuming development of the electronics resulted in a two-year production delay, with the first customer cars finally being delivered in 1986. Thanks to its extensive equipment and pioneering onboard technology, the Lagonda Series II has become a landmark in automotive history and a true precursor to many of the technologies found in modern cars. A total of 482 Series II examples were produced. The example we are delighted to offer today is a 1986 Aston Martin Lagonda Series II, showing just under 9,000 km from new. As a 1986 model, it belongs to the final Lagondas equipped with Weber carburettors and is among the last Series II cars to leave the Newport Pagnell production line. This Aston Martin Lagonda is presented in its stunning original « Salisbury Blue » (ACR 2014), complemented by its distinctive gold side stripes. The exterior is paired with a « Magnolia » interior (3997), featuring dark blue stitching (3282). The car began its life as a show car for Aston Martin Lagonda in the late 1980s, before being purchased directly from Aston Martin Ltd in the United Kingdom by its first Swedish owner on 17 May 1988. It changed hands on 13 November 1992, joining its second Swedish owner, with whom it would remain for no fewer than 22 years. In 2020, following a period in the hands of a Swiss dealer, the Lagonda finally joined its current owner in Germany. Today, the car is offered with its original tool kit and an exceptionally comprehensive history file, including its « Car Record Card », the factory document confirming its original specification and matching-numbers status. With its exceptionally low mileage, remarkable state of preservation, original specification and extensively documented history, this Aston Martin Lagonda Series II represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of the finest examples of this pioneering model, of which 645 examples were produced in total.
