The RS5 Avant replaces the RS4 and is the first RS model Audi has built as a plug-in hybrid. The familiar 2.9 litre twin-turbo V6 stays, joined by an electric motor, together good for 639 ps and 825 Nm. The real innovation sits at the rear. Audi built a new rear axle transmission that actively distributes torque between the left and right rear wheels. Where quattro until now mainly shifted power front to back, this car pushes itself through a corner from the outside rear wheel. The result is a two tonne estate that will oversteer when you ask it to, and behaves exactly like an Avant should when you don't. Fun fact: under braking, a chequered flag pattern appears on the rear window, projected alongside the third brake light. Audi bouwde een nieuwe achterastransmissie die het koppel actief tussen het linker en rechter achterwiel kan verdelen. Waar een quattro tot nu toe vooral vermogen naar voren of naar achteren stuurde, duwt deze auto zichzelf de bocht door vanaf het buitenste achterwiel. Het resultaat is een break van ruim twee ton die overstuur kan rijden wanneer je dat vraagt, en die zich daarbuiten gewoon gedraagt zoals een Avant hoort. Leuk detail: bij het remmen verschijnt er een geblokte vlag op de achterruit, geprojecteerd naast het derde remlicht. Là où le quattro déplaçait jusqu'ici la puissance surtout de l'avant vers l'arrière, cette voiture se pousse dans le virage depuis la roue arrière extérieure. Le résultat est un break de plus de deux tonnes qui survire quand on le lui demande, et se comporte comme un Avant doit le faire le reste du temps. Anecdote: au freinage, un motif de drapeau à damier apparaît sur la lunette arrière, projeté à côté du troisième feu stop.
