L'architettura affonda le radici nell’incomparabile esperienza racing del Cavallino Rampante: la prima Ferrari a montare un V6 centrale-posteriore fu la 246 SP nel 1961, vettura che vinse tra l’altro la Targa Florio quell’anno e nel 1962. Sempre nel 1961, Ferrari vinse il suo primo titolo Costruttori di Formula 1 con la 156 F1 spinta da un V6 a 120°. I turbo centrali furono installati per la prima volta da Ferrari sulla 126 CK e poi sulla 126 C2, prima monoposto turbo ad aggiudicarsi il Campionato del Mondo di Formula 1 nel 1982, cui seguì anche il successo del 1983 con la 126 C3. Infine, l’architettura PHEV V6 turbo è quella montata su tutte le monoposto di Formula 1 sin dal 2014. La 296 GTS enfatizza ulteriormente la linea pulita e raffinata che caratterizza la 296 GTB. A tetto aperto rappresenta la versione più elegante del concetto open-air hybrid e, con la sua architettura inedita per una spider, apre un nuovo capitolo nella storia del Marchio.
