Het tijdloze ontwerp ontstond onder leiding van hoofdontwerper Bruno Sacco, en met innovaties als de automatisch uitklappende rolbeugel liep de SL ver voor op zijn tijd. Bij de facelift van 1998 kreeg de SL 320 een geheel nieuwe 3.2 liter V6 motor met drie kleppen per cilinder en dubbele ontsteking, goed voor 224 pk, gekoppeld aan een soepele automatische versnellingsbak. Dit exemplaar uit 1999 werd nieuw geleverd in Zwitserland en is afkomstig van de tweede eigenaar. During the 1998 facelift, the SL 320 received an all-new 3.2-liter V6 engine featuring three valves per cylinder and dual ignition—producing 224 hp—paired with a smooth automatic transmission.
